Jew by Choice discusses conversion controversy

This is a must-read.

In a nutshell:

"Geirim [converts] everywhere are questioning their Jewishness and what ramifications the new standards will have down the line. Will the individual convert’s rabbi still be on the list in twenty years? Will these converts ever be accepted as Jews? Or will they remain permanent outsiders, their Jewish identity always in question?"

Isn't it forbidden to remind a convert of his identity as such? How much more shameful is holding it over his head in perpetuity, under the threat of retroactive and multigenerational excommunication, unless he follows the dictates of a particular rabbi?

One would hope that this nonsense would wake people up to the shenanigans of these aspiring theocrats. It may yet.

To the best of my admittedly-limited knowledge, you're right. I certainly hope that a more moderate and reasonable approach prevails.

this is me smirking. Only a born-Jew could have been unaware that this is the scenario faces ALL Jewish converts for the last twenty years.

The very first thing that most of us are confronted with is not whether we'll be "accepted," but BY WHOM we'll be accepted, from Reform on up through Orthodox, who have had to worry about the Charedim for a while, now.

Any convert who goes into the process hoping that someone else will be able to certify FOR THEM, stand up for them, etc., is deluded. The Orthodox used to do this for their folks, but haven't now for a long time.

As the Israeli religous politics get worse, so will the conversion issue.

Guilty as charged--I really had no idea. I've always known that *non*-Orthodox conversions were an issue, but the first time I heard of *Orthodox* conversions being challenged was only a couple of years ago, and the question involved only one conversion.
